SATURDAY OCT. 23 10-12: decorating for the haunted house at the Historical Society (next to the Graystone restaurant). MONDAY OCT. 25 6-8. library's Halloween Party. Please wear costumes. THURSDAY OCT. 28 5:30-8: Haunted House at the Historical Society. Creepy dolls know who they are. Other volunteers, please come costumed to do your scary thing.

The next meeting for everyone will be on Tues. Oct. 19 @ 6:00. Decorating for the haunted house at the Historical Society will be on Sat. Oct. 22 from 10-12. They have non-corny decorations and strobe lights, but you are free to bring stuff with you. The library's Halloween Party will be on Mon. Oct. 25 from 6-8. Please let me know if you can volunteer. The Haunted House is Thurs. Oct. 28 from 5:30-8:00.

Item 2: Republican and Herald reporter (and husband of our reference librarian) Steve Pytak expressed interest in talking to the TAB about the book discussion group, etc... so he may be coming to one of our meetings in the near future.

The Teen Advisory Board's first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday, February 4th at 6:00. Topics include planning a new lock-in, new programs for teens, and ideas for the Summer Reading Program.

Writing Contest

Don't forget about our scary story contest. Turn in your original spine-chilling tale by October 25. The best entries will be put together and made into a book that can be checked out of the library. Entries should be about 2 pages long and it would be great if they were typed. Make it SCARY!

hello peeps! yo im the guest blogger for today and everyday ( cuz im the only one willing to make a complete idiot out of myself, for the pure joy of others.)

ok coolio. im going to tell you about the awesome ways of the Pottsville Free Public Library! :-D it's cool because if you like to read they have some really great selections of awesome teen books,( im a teen, representing all you awesome teen readers out there in this fabulous world.) ok im sittin here with my girl Andrea, and im going to ask some real awesome questions to a really a smart girl.

Myrissa: How can you get a libray card in this joint?

Andrea: you come with your cool parents(not) and they have to have a good I.D. ( that's really them) and they and you have to fill out a boring short form. and then you will get your totally wicked card with upside down books on it.

What I actually said: You need to come in with a parent. Your parent needs to have a picture ID and something with their current address. If you're over 16 you don't need your parents, but you need your own ID with current address.

Also, the form is way too short to be boring. It's like a 3" by 5" index card. (and I don't think the books are upside down)

M: what if you lose your card. ( like me, im always losing everything i have) what do you do? do you have to pay money?

A: if you lose your card it costs a dollar to replace it. Just come to the awesome library and get a new one.

What I actually said: It costs $1 to replace a lost card.

M: do you have computers and how do you get one?

A: We have 8 computers available in the children's room. You can use them if you have a library card. If you're 16 or older you'll use the adult computers.

This is actually what I said. Myrissa wanted a break from typing.

M: thank you for your time. im glad you would take time out of your hectic awesome life.

Myrissa: Why did you decide to work at the library?

Jaime: It's better than any other job in town. it also has less hours so i can be with my family.

M: Do you like to read?

J: yes i like to read when i get the chance to.

M: what do you like to read?

J: i like to read about things that are fiction but fiction that can happen in real life.

M: Do you like your job and would you like to keep it?

J: yes i love it and i would like to keep my job thank you!

M: do you like the people you work with?

J: no. just kidding, i like the people around me.

M: did you always dream about checking out books?

J: no, when i was younger i wanted to be a graphic designer

M: what did you do before you worked at an awesome library?

J: i was an Administrative Assistant in an office.

M: this might be personal but what are your hobbies?

J: Being a totally awesome mom, a soccer coach and listening to music

September TAB Meeting

Our next Teen Advisory Board meeting is this Wednesday, September 24. We'll be picking new books and planning October's "Haunted Library" tour. If you're not a member of the TAB but would like to help out with the Halloween program, you can come to this meeting. It starts at 6 pm. TAB is open to those in grades 6-12.

Teen Read Week starts October 12 and we're celebrating with the introduction of a teen book swap program. Gather all of those gently used books you know you'll never read again and trade them in for new (used but new to you) ones. If you don't find anything you want to trade for right away, you can get a coupon to use when someone brings in a book that's up to your standards. The Book Swap Shelf will be open for business any time the library is open and is for everyone in grades 6-12.

Don't let those assigned text books suck all the fun out of reading. Be sure to take time to read for the fun of it! Check out some Books with Bite in the library's Teen Area during this year's Teen Read Week. We've got plenty of titles to satisfy your cravings for a good horror story.

There's a lot of vampire fiction out there beyond the Edward and Bella saga. Here are some Suggestions.

My Swordhand is Singing
by Marcus Sedgwick
The word "vampire" is never mentioned here but there's no doubt about what's stalking the characters in this chilling story. It's so good!

Thirsty
by M. T. Anderson
Edward makes being a vampire look pretty good, but life isn't so glamorous for Chris. He's no longer quite human, if that's discovered he'll have a very public execution, and his parents might just be the first in line to turn him in. A vampire can live forever but Chris will be lucky if he makes it through his first week. For a similarly bleak view of becoming a vampire, check out Life Sucks by Jessica Abel

Blue Bloods and Masquerade
by Melissa De la Cruz
These books are pretty much what Gossip Girl would be like if all of the characters were vampires in addition to being wealthy and scandalous.

Here are a few of the books that TAB members decided we should buy at our August meeting.

Identical by Ellen Hopkins
If you like Hopkins' other books (Impulse, Crank, Glass and Burned) you will not be disappointed by her latest. This book deals with eating disorders, abuse, alcoholism and a bunch of other real, hard life issues without pulling any punches. It's coming soon so let me know if you want it reserved.

Yes this is yet another book about vampires. This one is actually a pretty good story. It's really suspenseful and has a different take on vampire lore than we've seen before. If you like your books a little on the horrific side, Night Road by A.M. Jenkins is definitely worth a read.

13 year old Scott MacLeod gets in a little trouble and somehow ends up in space with a couple of chimps. That's right. And you thought getting grounded was bad.

Twilight Saga
